Who is a standalone program worthwhile for?

A complete Office suite is not always necessary. If you work almost exclusively with Excel in everyday life, a standalone program means you only pay for what you really use. This is typical for workstations with clearly defined tasks that nevertheless need a fully compatible Microsoft program for exchanging files with customers, authorities or colleagues.

A standalone program also makes sense as an addition: if you already own an older Office, for example, you can bring the program you use most often up to the 2024 level.

Excel 2024 is a perpetual licence. You pay once and use the program without a term and without annual renewal. Windows Update or the Office update function continues to install security and quality updates automatically. Compared with a Microsoft 365 subscription, the purchase usually pays for itself after a short time.

File formats and compatibility

Excel 2024 saves in XLSX format, and workbooks with macros as XLSM. Both formats can also be opened by older Excel versions from 2010 and by Excel for Mac. However, new functions such as TEXTSPLIT are not calculated in older versions; bear this in mind if you share files with colleagues who still use an older Excel. You import CSV files from online banking, inventory management or your shop via “Get Data”; separators and number formats are recognised correctly. For LibreOffice users, save in ODS format.
