Standard CAL or Enterprise CAL – which is the right choice?

SharePoint Server 2016 CALs are available in two variants:

SharePoint Server 2016 Standard CAL – The Standard CAL entitles you to access all basic SharePoint 2016 functions: document management with versioning and permissions, team sites, intranet portal, workflows, enterprise search, social features, DLP policies, mobile support and hybrid integration with Office 365. For most employees in their everyday work, the Standard CAL is entirely sufficient and the more economical choice.

SharePoint Server 2016 Enterprise CAL – The Enterprise CAL is an add-on licence to the Standard CAL and always requires it. Enterprise CALs extend the range of functions with Visio Services, PerformancePoint Services for interactive dashboards and KPI monitoring, and InfoPath Forms Services for complex electronic forms. Excel Services are no longer included in SharePoint 2016 – this function is provided by the separate Office Online Server. Enterprise CALs are relevant for users who use SharePoint as a business intelligence platform or for advanced process automation.

If five of these 30 people use business intelligence functions, these 5 users each additionally need an Enterprise CAL.

Important: SharePoint Server CALs are exclusively user-based – there are no Device CALs. Every user needs their own CAL, regardless of how many devices they use to access SharePoint.
