Buy Windows Server 2012 – replacement licences for legacy systems

A Windows Server 2012 licence is still needed today in very specific cases: for maintaining existing systems, for running older hardware, for environments with legacy applications that only run on this platform, or as a replacement licence in existing infrastructures. At Lizenzindustrie you get Windows Server 2012 as a verified licence – by email, at a low price. You will find an overview of all server versions under Windows Server.

Our recommendation: Use Windows Server 2012 where existing systems or applications require exactly this version. For all other purposes, we advise Windows Server 2025 or the proven Windows Server 2022.

Who is Windows Server 2012 still relevant for today?

Demand for Windows Server 2012 licences today is highly specialised and comes almost exclusively from areas running older IT infrastructures that cannot easily be migrated to a newer version for technical, financial or regulatory reasons.

Typical scenarios include industrial companies and manufacturing plants where control systems, machines or specialist software are tightly integrated with Windows Server 2012 and migrating the entire environment would involve considerable effort. IT service providers also occasionally need Windows Server 2012 licences to maintain or restore existing customer infrastructures.

In addition, there are organisations in regulated sectors – healthcare, public administration, financial services – in which system versions are fixed for the long term for compliance reasons and an upgrade is not possible in the short term.

Windows Server 2012 editions at a glance

• Windows Server 2012 Standard
The edition for physical servers and environments with up to two virtual machines per licence. Standard includes the full Windows Server 2012 feature set – Active Directory, Hyper-V, IIS and all core server services. For companies in existing Windows Server 2012 environments that need replacement or expansion licences.
• Windows Server 2012 Datacenter
The edition for highly virtualised environments with an unlimited number of VMs on the licensed physical host. For existing Datacenter infrastructures that need replacement or expansion licences.

Clearly recommended: upgrade to a newer version

If your IT infrastructure allows an upgrade and there are no compelling technical reasons to stay on Windows Server 2012, switching to a more modern version is strongly recommended. The differences in security, features and compatibility are considerable:

• Windows Server 2019 – Hyper-V, container support and improved security in a proven version.
• Windows Server 2022 – Modern security architecture and Secured-core server, mature enough for everyday business use.
• Windows Server 2025 – The latest generation – our recommendation if you are setting up from scratch.
