Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 Standard – e-mail, calendar and contacts in-house

With Exchange Server 2013 Standard, you run your e-mail infrastructure on your own hardware: mailboxes, calendars, contacts and tasks are on your server, and your employees access them with Outlook, via the browser or with their smartphone. The Standard edition is designed for small and medium-sized environments and supports up to five mailbox databases per server – enough for most companies with a few dozen to several hundred mailboxes.

You receive a server licence for one server. For each user or device that accesses Exchange, you also need a Exchange Server 2013 User CAL or Device CAL and a Windows Server CAL.

The key facts at a glance

  • Server licence for Exchange Server 2013 Standard – one licence per server
  • Mailboxes, shared calendars, contacts and public folders
  • Access via Outlook, browser and smartphone (Exchange ActiveSync)
  • Up to five mailbox databases per server
  • High availability via database availability groups (DAG) possible
  • Product key and download by e-mail, with invoice

Who is Exchange Server 2013 Standard for?

  • Companies that want to keep e-mail and calendars in their own data centre for data protection reasons
  • Law firms, medical practices and tax offices with special confidentiality requirements
  • Companies whose specialist applications such as ERP, CRM or archive systems are connected directly to Exchange
  • IT service providers who set up and manage Exchange for their customers
  • Existing Exchange environments that are being extended or moved to new hardware

New in Exchange Server 2013

  • Web-based Exchange Admin Center replaces the former management console
  • Data loss prevention (DLP) with templates, for example for bank details or ID numbers
  • Public folders are stored in mailbox databases and are therefore also highly available
  • Outlook Web App can also be used offline
  • Simplified architecture with only two server roles

Why Exchange Server 2013?

Exchange Server 2013 introduced the web-based admin center and data loss prevention. In many companies it is connected to specialist applications that were set up for exactly this version – there, matching licences of the same version are needed.

Standard and Enterprise compared

Mailbox databasesStandard: up to 5 · Enterprise: for large environments with many databases
Mailboxesnot limited by the licence – hardware and the number of CALs are what count
High availability (DAG)possible in both editions
Client access licencesExchange CAL per user or device, plus Windows Server CAL
Server licenceone licence per installed Exchange server

You will find more licences in the category Exchange Server 2013. You will find the matching operating system under Windows Server 2012 R2.

Typical scenarios

  • Replacing an older mail server without moving mailboxes to the cloud
  • Central scheduling with shared calendars, room and resource mailboxes
  • Shared mailboxes such as info@ or invoice@ handled jointly by several employees
  • Mobile working: e-mails, appointments and contacts synchronised on smartphone and tablet
  • Connecting scanners, inventory management and fax services that send e-mails

Example calculation

A company with 25 employees who all work with Outlook and a smartphone needs one Exchange Server 2013 Standard server licence, 25 Exchange User CALs and 25 Windows Server User CALs. With User CALs every employee is covered, no matter how many devices they use. If, on the other hand, 40 employees work in shifts on 12 shared PCs, 12 Device CALs are usually cheaper. Shared mailboxes and room mailboxes do not need their own CAL.

Documenting licences properly

Keep the invoice, product key and a list of your CALs together and note on which server the licence is installed. In a licence audit or when changing IT service provider, you can then prove at any time which licences you own and what they are used for.

  • Hard disk: at least 30 GB on the installation drive, plus space for databases and logs

Frequently asked questions

Do I need CALs as well?

Yes. Every user or device that accesses Exchange needs an Exchange CAL and a Windows Server CAL. The server licence alone only covers the server.

How many mailboxes can I create?

The server licence does not limit the number of mailboxes. What counts is the performance of your hardware and the number of your CALs.

Does Exchange work with my Outlook?

Exchange Server 2013 works with Outlook 2007 SP3, Outlook 2010 SP1, Outlook 2013 and newer versions. To match, you will find for example Outlook 2013 in our shop.

Do I need a separate licence for each server?

Yes. Every server on which Exchange is installed – including a second server for failover – needs its own server licence.

My software requires a specific version – what should I do?

Before buying, check which version the vendor of your specialist application has approved. Feel free to write to us in advance – we will tell you which licence suits your environment.

Will I receive an invoice?

Yes, with VAT shown, with your company address on request.
