Why a VPN matters

On public Wi-Fi, third parties can read unencrypted connections or set up fake hotspots. A VPN encrypts all data traffic between your device and the VPN server and hides your IP address – so passwords, e-mails and banking details stay protected on the go too.

An example from practice

A field sales representative is working on hotel Wi-Fi. With the VPN switched on, the connection to the company mailbox and online banking is encrypted – even if the hotel network itself is unsecured.

Everyday tips

Good software is the foundation; a few habits make protection even more effective:

• When you are out and about, only connect to Wi-Fi networks whose names you know – fraudsters like to use similar-sounding hotspots.
• Set the VPN to start automatically as soon as you join an unknown network.
• Look for the padlock symbol in your browser before entering any data.
• Use a separate password for every account.
• Turn off automatic connection to open Wi-Fi networks in your device settings.

System requirements

• Operating system (Windows): Windows 10 or Windows 11
• Operating system (macOS): current macOS versions
• Operating system (Android): current Android versions
• Operating system (iOS): current iOS and iPadOS versions
• Storage: about 1 to 3 GB of free space, depending on the platform
• Internet: required for activation and operation
• Account: free customer account with the manufacturer (HMA account)

The manufacturer lists the exact minimum versions on its website.
